About Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma Cancer

Like blood circulation human body has Lymphatic circulation. A fraction of blood is filtered out and enters this ”Lymphatic circulation. This lymphatic circulation mainly contains this filtrate called lymph and cells of immune system called lymphocytes. This lymphatic circulation has few stations called lymph nodes. This system contains cells of immune system that acts as a watchman of the human body. Lymphocytes can be grouped as T or B. Lymphoma is a cancer of the cells of lymph nodes. Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is a broad category of lymphoma comprising of several subtypes. Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma is most common type of it. The other general category of lymphoma is Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Some general signs and symptoms of Nonhodgkin lymphoma are:

  • Swollen lymph nodes in your neck, armpits or groin
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Fatigue
  • Fever
  • Excessive sweating (especially at night)
  • Abdominal swelling or pain
  • Unexplained chest pain
  • Coughing or trouble breathing
Diagnosis, Management and Treatment
  • Physical exam – In physical examination the medical professional may look for swollen lymph nodes in the neck, armpit and groin region.
  • Blood or urine tests – It may help in figuring out the infection or other disease.
  • Imaging tests – It is performed to look for extent of lymphomas in the body. It may include ultrasonography, CT Scan, MRI and Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scan.
  • Lymph node biopsy – In this test, the lymph node tissue will be examined in a lab under microscope followed by performance of special tests like immunohistochemistry, molecular tests.
  • Bone marrow test – In this the sample will be taken from your bone marrow by inserting a needle into your hip bone. The sample is then examined to look for any traces of Nonhodgkin lymphoma.
